Italian Restaurants in San Sebastian

If you’re craving Italian while in San Sebastian, you’re in luck. The city’s food scene isn’t just about pintxos; the Italians have definitely made their mark here. You won’t find just any old pizza places, there’s a handful of spots that make dough and sauce like they do down in Naples, with that perfect char and chew.

One of my favorite places is Berpiztu. It’s not just Italian, but their carbonara is as creamy and authentic as I’ve had outside Rome. And heads up, it gets busy on weekends, so best to grab a reservation or come early. In Gros, there’s also Le Petit Comite which does a great risotto that melts in your mouth, comfort food with a splash of Basque charm.

Here’s a little local nugget: If you’re visiting in spring or early summer, try to catch a spot with a terrace. San Sebastian’s weather makes for fantastic outdoor dining, especially around the old town or near the harbor. Trust me, a glass of good Italian wine on a sunny afternoon, followed by a perfectly balanced tiramisu, is a nice break from all the seafood and pintxos craziness.

Italian eats you can’t miss

If you want a quick tip: skip the chains and look for small, family-run places. One tucked just outside the old town on Calle Fermin Calbeton serves pasta that feels homemade, like your Italian aunt made it for Sunday lunch.

Also, don’t be shy about asking the chef what’s fresh or what they recommend. Italians love chatting about food, and in San Sebastian, chefs often love showing off local Basque ingredients with an Italian twist. That might lead you to something off-menu or a special house-made dessert you wouldn’t see otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Italian food in San Sebastian? Here’s some local insight.

Try Berpiztu in the city center. They nail the thin, slightly charred crust and fresh ingredients. It’s popular, so go early or book ahead.

Definitely. Gros has a few quieter Italian joints like Le Petit Comite, where the vibe’s a little more relaxed and the risotto is something to remember.

Yes! Many blend Italian recipes with local fish, vegetables, and even cheeses. It’s a cool twist that makes dining in San Sebastian special.

More and more places are offering gluten-free pasta or pizza bases, but I’d still call ahead. Italians are pretty used to accommodating dietary needs nowadays.

Ask for cacio e pepe if it’s on the menu. It’s a simple pasta but when done right, wildly addictive. Not every spot tries it, so it’s a nice way to mix things up.
